About The Artist
Styles and Influences
In her professional development, Liliana has embraced several painting styles from the purely abstract featuring science fiction themes, to impressionism, surrealism and figurative. Recently she has returned to paint in her preferred style, abstract with bold conceptions and forms, painted sculptures, as can be seen in her latest series: “Vessels in the Sun”, a bold portrait of sculpturally painted boats sailing in a luminous spiritual sea.
Formation and Early Years
Liliana took her first lessons in oil painting, and developed a beautifully classical, naturalistic drawing from her father Agustin Alvarez, an excellent Impressionist painter who studied in Madrid and Barcelona.
In Puerto Rico she studied at the prestigious Art League of San Juan, working alongside two teachers and artists-in-residence: James Shine, her painting mentor and founder of the Taller 78 studio, and Bob Nash, the famed Puerto Rican sculptor. Her resulting abstract paintings were exhibited in the San Juan Town Hall art gallery in a one-woman show under the auspices of San Juan’s mayor. She continued her studies in Puerto Rico with acclaimed expressionistic painter Jorge Rechany up until moving back to the mainland.
Always Growing, Always Learning
Liliana has exhibited at many venues in Tampa, Puerto Rico, and Miami, namely the Annual UN Exhibit for local artists in Puerto Rico, as well as three UNESCO sponsored competition/exhibitions at the Art League of San Juan.
She has exhibited in another one-woman show in Brandon, FL and in many collective shows throughout her professional career. In Miami she has exhibited at The Hialeah Main Public Library, the Coral Gables Public Library, Miami Dade College Main Campus, and the University of Miami. Her work has received six awards from the ACCA (Asociacion de Criticos y Comentaristas de Arte) in Miami, and the Coral Gables Art Club. Her works are collected internationally.
Liliana continually hones her craft with ongoing studies in Drawing, Design and Sculpture at the University of Miami in collaboration with various professors.
